FAITHcast Podcast Information
What is FAITHcast?
FAITHcast is a podcast collection of audio, video or text pages whose content access is powered by podcatcher subscription software called RSS (Really Simple Syndication). Podcatcher software subscribes to Podcasts of your choice and delivers the content directly to your computer -- without you having to check websites to see if new podcasts are available.
How do I subscribe?
To subscribe to FAITHcast, you need software and information listed below:
- Podcatcher software: There are numerous free programs that you can download to play your podcasts -- itunes and ipodder are the most common. If you have a Pod player, you may have received software with it. If you use your computer as the pod player, you may use software of your choice to subscribe and listen as your time permits. Some email software, such as Thunderbird, includes RSS subscription capability, as well as web browsers such as Firefox 2.0 or Internet Explorer 7.0.
- The URL of your podcast's RSS/XML feed: Podcatcher software will ask you for a URL of the podcast subscription. You can get this a couple different ways: you may highlight the link displayed below the XML graphic and copy it to the clipboard, or you may click on the XML graphic to display the related podcasting page, then highlight the address and copy it to the clipboard. In your podcatcher software, paste in the URL from the clipboard. Each software package management is a little different, so it is difficult to describe details for each kind. Refer to the associated help files or documentation with your software of choice.
What should I expect when I've subscribed?
When your podcatcher software is open or active in the background, it will periodically go to the list of subscriptions and check for new entries in the RSS/XML document to which you've subscribed. When it finds something new, it will automatically download the amount of information you've defined in the management of that particular subscription. If you use software that interfaces with a pod device, you can load the media to that device. If you use your computer for listening / viewing, you can do that on your own schedule. You can delete entries when you are finished or sooner. You can unsubscribe anytime you wish.
What action does the XML graphic provide?
If you would like to preview the content of a podcast before subscribing to it, you may click on the XML graphic to view the RSS feed available through your browser. In many cases (browser specific), you will be able to manually activate a particular podcast to see if this is the type of program to which you want to subscribe.
How about more help?
If you are having problems subscribing to FAITHcasts, call the church office or email someone on the leadership menu with information about your problem and we will try to have someone help you who may be familiar with your particular software. Please tell us which podcatcher software you are using, the error or difficulty you are experiencing, your operating system, and network connection (broadband is necessary to function correctly because of the large file sizes for audio and video podcasts and the behind-the-scenes subscription checking).
